This article attempts primarily to clarify the case of the "People of God" in the world of creation. It addresses the question: What are men and women doing in the world of creation when they claim, "We are a People of God"? This question is raised due to the ever-growing diversity of notions attributed to the phrase "People of God" from which problems of obscure meaning, truth-disclosure, and clear understanding arise. To address these problems, I attempt to reconceptualize and reinterpret (...) the case of the People of God, following the philosophical thoughts of Karl Rahner and Karol Wojtyla , Alfred North Whitehead and Hans-Georg Gadamer . This attempt is needed to know, learn, and understand the reality that goes along with the case of the People of God. The task of reconceptualization and reinterpretation exhibits an ontological hermeneutics of the phrase with the end in view of creating a new paradigm: from universality to universalizability. This clarification of the case of the People of God also suggests a metaecclesiology, which occasions men and women to give a "new expression" to their being a People of God. This "new expression" makes the case of the People of God more relevant to every age. (shrink)

The trade-offs of “meaning-making” between East and West may be regarded as an aggiornamento for any culture in contact. But since aggiornamento entails a wide range of subjects, the essay situates the meaning-making within the scope of masterpieces in diverse formats, from the printed literary text to the painted image. Specifically, the essay offers a rethinking of the cross-cultural semiotic dialogue, paving the way for recognizing the homo significans. However, the customary framing of the Spoliarium does not seem to warrant (...) its conscious knowledge and understanding as a text and a visual art. For this reason, the essay endorses its reframing and its aggiornamento, which is induced by the rapid advancement of science and technology. (shrink)

In fact, thisattempt goes with the contention that philosophy does not subsist in a vacuum; philosophy requires a culture of human beings, capable of thinking and reasoning - a requirement that is universal and universalizable. In this context, the writer is compelled to exemplify this role, and maintain the case that Filipino philosophy emerges from a Filipino culture. (...) A number of p rofessionals claim that moral bioenhancement (MB) is n ecessary f or humanity to avert catastrophe. With the rapid advancements of science and technology, human beings have drastically altered their natural and social environments while their moral sensibility continues to be unaffected. They alleged that this is a mismatch, and since it becomes easier to harm than to benefit others, which they anticipate as a global threat, they p romptly want MB to be obligatory to all. But (...) the essay argues that MB is not necessary, and that it is not equivalent to moral enhancement (ME). In keeping with this argument, the essay advances the following: (1) a reexamination of ME and its relation to MB, (2) distinction between bioenhancement and biomedicine (BM), (3) the human being in relation to nature and technology, and (4) the meaning and axiology of MB. The article aims to elucidate on the notion of philosophy of culture, particularly in non-Western societies. This is exemplified by the promotion of philosophy,with its advocates and approaches, in Filipino culture. In addition, it gives an account of a type of alienation that has had a profound influence upon the Filipinoexperience, philosophical thought and practice; the so-called dealienation of culture.

The pedagogical function of science teaching may benefit from an analysis of the historical-epistemic dimension, without neglecting the socio-political context in which a given research was carried out. In the case of DNA structure, the background of its discovery is particularly complex. Starting from the analysis of some papers, the view on the circumstances that led to their drafting broadens. We try to answer the fundamental question for any educator: why teach all that? Ethics issues are related to the general (...) organisation of research, increasingly focused on speed and competition. Even teaching is affected by these dynamics, not only in higher education, but also at secondary level; students should be made aware of this trend. The history of science could therefore favour a more general awareness. _SUNTO_ La funzione pedagogica dell’insegnamento scientifico può trarre vantaggio da un’analisi della dimensione storico-epistemica, senza trascurare il contesto socio-politico nel quale una determinata ricerca è stata condotta. Nel caso della struttura del DNA, i retroscena della sua scoperta sono particolarmente complessi. Dopo l’analisi di alcuni articoli, si allarga gradualmente la vista sulle circostanze che hanno condotto alla loro stesura. Si cerca di rispondere a una domanda fondamentale per ogni educatore: perché insegnare tutto ciò? Le questioni etiche riguardano l’organizzazione generale della ricerca, sempre più tesa alla velocità e alla competizione. Persino l’insegnamento è influenzato da dinamiche simili, non solo in ambito accademico, ma anche a livello secondario; gli studenti dovrebbero essere a conoscenza di questa tendenza. La storia della scienza può dunque favorire una maggiore consapevolezza. (shrink)

Esta obra pretende ofrecer una aproximación asequible, pero a la vez exigente y rigurosa, a las principales corrientes y debates teóricos de la disciplina de las Relaciones Internacionales, incluyendo tanto las teorías tradicionales, que siguen ejerciendo una notable influencia, como las aproximaciones más críticas y novedosas que han centrado (...) el debate teórico contemporáneo. Con ese propósito se ha reunido una destacada muestra de especialistas de la escuela española de Relaciones Internacionales, cuyos orígenes y formación son a su vez objeto de estudio. En sus capítulos se examina críticamente el etnocentrismo de una disciplina que no es ajena a la hegemonía estadounidense, material e ideacional, como marco para el estudio de las distintas teorías: el realismo y el institucionalismo, así como los debates y síntesis de sus revisiones neorrealistas y neo-institucionalistas; la Escuela inglesa de la Sociedad internacional, el social-constructivismo, la teoría crítica, el postestructuralismo, y la teoría feminista de las Relaciones Internacionales. Depois de estabelecer as características do corpo político ou soberano e destacar a função excepcional do legislador no Livro segundo do Contrato social, e no livro seguinte analisada a incumbência do governo na ordem política, Rousseau, no livro quarto da obra referida, se mobiliza para demonstrar a importância fundamental de algumas instituições para a manutenção dos valores republicanos. Entre as diversas instituições apresentadas pelo filósofo genebrino que visam cumprir esses objetivos, o presente artigo se concentra no exame de três delas: (...) o tribunato, a ditadura e a censura - instituições claramente inspiradas nas instituições romanas no período da Roma republicana. Em vista disso, indagamos: em que consiste o tribunato, a ditadura e a censura no arcabouço teórico de Rousseau? Quais são suas características? Como elas podem contribuir para a conservação da República? Partindo dessas indagações, pretende-se investigar as definições das três instituições elencadas bem como suas particularidades e a maneira como elas operam e podem contribuir para a preservação da República em longo prazo. In this paper, we examine the period that immediately followed the invention of the Leiden jar. Historians of science have developed narrations that emphasize the role of grounding during the process of charging the jar. In this respect, this episode shows significant aspects that can be used to characterize science, scientific knowledge production, and the nature of science. From our own experimentation, we learned that grounding was not necessary in order to produce the effect. These experiences inspired us to go (...) back to primary sources. In doing so, we came to a new understanding of the early period after Kleist’s and Musschenbroek’s initial creation of the effect. From our analysis, we conclude that it is not the grounding which was perceived as a major innovation during this early period of the discussion but the concept of an electrical circuit. This understanding was fundamental in characterizing the Leiden jar as a new device challenging the then current knowledge of experimental practices in the field of electricity. (shrink)

O problema da desigualdade se apresenta como um constante objeto de reflexão na filosofia de Rousseau, perpassando diversas de suas obras. Buscando analisar a relação entre a desigualdade social e a corrupção política no pensamento rousseauniano mediante a defesa da hipótese de que a desigualdade social se configura em um fenômeno responsável pelo advento da corrupção política, pretende-se, nesse artigo, primeiro: examinar as distinções entre a desigualdade natural e a desigualdade social, ou seja, demarcar suas especificidades e como Rousseau compreende (...) cada uma delas; segundo, avaliar como a desigualdade social pode produzir a corrupção política, isto é, entender porque a desigualdade de riquezas ao produzir o luxo pode consequentemente engendrar a corrupção política, e, terceiro, ambiciona-se demonstrar quais são as consequências mais drásticas da desigualdade social na república. Com isso, almeja-se instaurar um frutífero debate e uma consistente reflexão. (shrink)

A virtude cívica representa uma peça de fundamental importância na engrenagem política republicana e pode desempenhar uma função decisiva na manutenção da república. Mas, como a virtude cívica se apresenta no republicanismo de Rousseau? Como tornar os cidadãos virtuosos e de que maneira cidadãos dotados dessa aptidão ou disposição podem contribuir para a preservação da república em longo prazo? Tais questões servirão de fio condutor para analisarmos a noção de virtude no arcabouço teórico rousseauísta. Resumo Ao encerrar a sua explicação concernente à noção de Lei, no capítulo VI do segundo livro do Contrato social, Jean-Jacques Rousseau apresenta algumas inquietações referentes à capacidade de uma população prematura elaborar um sistema de legislação. Tais inquietações conduzem o pensador genebrino a preconizar a necessidade de uma figura polêmica e excepcional, na engrenagem política republicana: o legislador. Considerando a excepcionalidade dessa figura, o presente artigo sustentará a hipótese de que, mais do que alguém hábil em formular um conjunto (...) de leis para um determinado povo, a função republicana primordial de um legislador é a de contribuir para engendrar um espírito público em cada cidadão pertencente à república. A hipótese aventada será defendida a partir de três objetivos: primeiro, examinar-se-ão as razões pelas quais Rousseau julga ser necessário um legislador na ordenação republicana; segundo, analisar-se-á por que a construção de um espírito público pelo legislador pode ser considerada uma função republicana; terceiro, perscrutar-se-ão quais são as condições necessárias para um povo receber uma boa legislação.In closing his explanation concerning the notion of law, in chapter VI of the second book of the Social contract, Jean-Jacques Rousseau has some concerns about the ability of a premature population to develop a legislation system. Such concerns lead the Genevan thinker to advocate the need for a controversial and exceptional personage in the republican political machinery: The legislator. Considering the exceptionality of this personage, this article will support the hypothesis that, more than being one skilled at presenting a set of laws to a particular people, the primary republican function assigned to the legislator is to contribute to engender a public spirit in every citizen belonging to the republic. The hypothesis presented will be defended from three objectives: first, I shall examine the reasons why Rousseau deems it necessary to have a legislator in the republican order; Second, I shall analyze why the construction of a public spirit by the legislator may be considered a republican function; third, I shall look into the conditions necessary for a people to receive a good legislation. Acreditar que os sujeitos têm que estudar a fim de obter apenas um emprego considerado “bom” é insuficiente para a construção de cidadãos realmente críticos, que não caiam no conformismo, mas questionem os objetos que estudamos, sabendo lutar contra ideologias e a manipulação de valores, com a formação de conceitos, e tendo um pensamento criativo, (...) crítico e curioso. O pensamento de Cícero inaugura o republicanismo romano e se apresenta como uma reflexão política que busca analisar questões primordiais para a República, tendo Roma Antiga como referência. Amiúde, verifica-se nesse pensamento a utilização de exemplos da vida política real com o intuito de formular uma crítica ao regime romano. O presente artigo tem como propósito central, por meio da investigação de um problema de gravidade incontestável: a corrupção política, examinar o republicanismo de Cícero mediante suas noções fundamentais. Assim, teremos (...) três objetivos: primeiro, compreender a concepção de República alicerçada na virtude, no interesse comum e na justiça; o segundo, avaliar as razões pelas quais a igualdade e a liberdade se inscrevem como suportes indispensáveis no referido regime político; e, o terceiro, analisar como Cícero define a corrupção política, a maneira como ela penetra na República e suas prováveis consequências. Neste artigo abordamos a temática cosmológica dominante na segunda metade do século XVI. Polarizada entre duas posições antagônicas: os partidários do geocentrismo, que se apoiavam no modelo descritivo aristotélico-ptolomaico, e os copernicanos que defendiam um cosmo heliocêntrico. Para desenvolver esse debate nos apoiamos em PLATAO, 2001; ARISTÓTELES, 2002 e COPÉRNICO, 2009, BRUNO, 2012; numa leitura hermenêutica da discussão cosmológica apresentada por esses autores. Diante desses dois víeis descritivos do cosmo nos interessava investigar qual a posição adotada por Giordano Bruno diante (...) desse contexto. Bruno, nos seus textos se apresenta como um crítico contumaz do geocentrismo, relacionando diretamente tal descrição a Aristóteles, e como um defensor do heliocentrismo copernicano. O debate cosmológico bruniano é expostos em várias obras, entre elas podemos citar A ceia das Cinzas publicada em 1584 e L’immenso e gli innumerevoli de 1592. O antiaristotelismo de Bruno é bastante contundente, mas o mesmo vigor não aparece ao tratar o modelo cosmológico copernicano. Nos perguntamos, então, o que justificava a elaboração do elogio bruniano, com ressalvas, a Copérnico. Concluímos que, apesar da aproximação com o heliocentrismo copernicano, não é possível caracterizar Bruno como um copernicano. Copérnico permaneceu atrelado aos conceito de última esfera, de universo hierarquizado, por exemplo, definições que são refutadas por Bruno. O cosmo bruniano é infinito, homogêneo e povoado de inumeráveis mundos. Esses conceitos não estão presentes no cosmo heliocêntrico copernicano. (shrink)

Este artigo objetiva a partir das considerações de Michel Foucault sobre a dimensão de uma estética da existência relacioná-la às vidas infames, em dois planos que parecem se vincular, a saber, primeiro, de dar destaque às vidas obscurecidas que apenas foram iluminadas quando colocadas como alvos de discursos empreendidos com a finalidade de classificação, controle e exclusão; segundo, da possibilidade de experiências transformadoras no que diz respeito às subjetividades marginalizadas. Examinaremos então em que medida a pesquisa foucaultiana portaria a virtualidade (...) de um deslocamento a um só tempo estético e ético, da modificação de um modo de vida, de um estilo de existência. Uma vez reconhecendo a dimensão estética em Foucault vinculada à arte de existir, pretendemos então tecer um texto que também se componha com as considerações do filósofo da estética Étienne Souriau, apresentadas no livro As Existências Mínimas, por David Lapoujade, no sentido de que os dois pensadores franceses parecem confluir na mesma direção no que liga a arte às transformações de si, isto é, ambos elaboram uma compreensão da estética interseccionada aos modos de existência, buscando tematizar de que modo as vidas que mesmo privadas do direito de existir, podem ainda encontrar espaços de criação e transformação. BackgroundMonitoring recovery–stress balance in sport is becoming more relevant to prevent training maladaptation and reach the optimal performance for each athlete. The use of questionnaires that identify the athlete’s recovery–stress state have much acceptance in sports due to reliability and useful, furthermore for its low cost. Identifying possible differences between sport modalities and sex is important to determine specific needs and possible intervention ways to keep a recovery–stress balance. The aim was to analyze the differences in the recovery–stress state and (...) mood states by sex and sport type during the competitive phase in young Mexican athletes. As a secondary objective, the psychometric properties of the Mexican version of the Recovery–Stress Questionnaire for Athletes were analyzed.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried on with 461 athletes, 17.95 years old, from six sports disciplines. The RESTQ-Sport and Profile of Mood States were applied in a single moment. Differences by sex and sports modality were analyzed. RESTQ-Sport’s confirmatory factor analysis was performed after the stress and recovery theoretical structure of two stress and two recovery dimensions, and last, the concurrent validation with the POMS was carried on.ResultsSignificant differences by sex were found in the General Recovery and Sport Stress dimensions of the RESTQ-Sport as well as Vigor factor of the POMS, being higher for men; furthermore, both the Sport Recovery dimension of RESTQ-Sport and Cholera and the Fatigue and Depression factors from POMS also had differences by sport type, showing a less recovery and high stress for individual sport athletes. Goodness-of-fit indexes of the model for the RESTQ-Sport were acceptable. Pearson’s correlation between questionnaires was moderate.ConclusionThe recovery–stress state shows differences in the function of sex and sport modality. More special attention is suggested for women and individual sport athletes. The higher punctuation for men compared with women in sport stress dimension did not negatively affect the recovery–stress balance for male athletes. Finally, the Mexican context adaptation of the RESTQ-Sport provides a psychometric instrument suitable to assess the recovery–stress balance in Mexican athletes. (shrink)

ResumoNo início do século xviii, Isaac Newton publicou seu principal trabalho sobre óptica, o Opticks. Impregnado por uma perspectiva indutiva, o livro logo se tornou a principal referência para os estudos sobre a luz e as cores, sendo amplamente popularizado pelos seguidores de Newton. Neste artigo, analisamos como dois importantes livros contribuíram para essa popularização e também qual era a imagem de ciência que tencionavam propagar, o Élements de la philosophie de Newton de Voltaire e o Newtonianismo per le dame (...) de Algarotti. Será possível perceber que ambos os autores distorceram o conteúdo do livro de Newton, no intuito de propagar uma imagem idealizada das ideias newtonianas e da própria filosofia natural.In the beginning of 18th century, Newton published his main work about light and colors, the Opticks. Impregnated by an inductive perspective, the book became the major reference for the studies about light and colors, being widely popularized by Newton's followers. In this article, we analyze how two important works contributed to this process of popularization and also what image of science they intended to propagate: Voltaire's Elements of Newton's philosophie and Algarotti's Sir Isaac Newton's philosophy explain'd for the use of the ladies. We will be notice that both authors distorted the content of the Opticks, in order to propagate an idealized image of Newtonian ideas and natural philosophy itself. (shrink)

In this project, we worked in partnership with school teachers who are frequent users of experimental kits available for loan to schools using the historical-investigative approach. The original kits bring a traditional approach to experimentation, without the presence of the history of science. We developed and implemented new guides to the kits, without changing their materials and instruments. Design-based research supports the development methodology; the school science topics covered in this paper are Joseph Black’s studies on latent and specific heat. (...) Although some of the challenges faced in the implementation of historical-investigative approach are known and well-documented, the present article addresses teachers’ perspectives and some of the problems they faced in the implementation process, most of them related to school and teacher working conditions. Even though this is a case study with a small number of schools and teachers, it is possible to say that there is a huge gap to overcome before the historical-investigative approach can be implemented in large scale. Este artigo procura a partir do contexto da pandemia provocada pelo coronavírus tecer articulações com o pensamento do filósofo francês Michel Foucault, em seu curso realizado no Collège de France, Segurança, Território e População, sobre as formas de exercício do poder e o tratamento dispensado às doenças epidêmicas. Como pano de fundo, tematizaremos também estratégias de governo pautadas tanto na manutenção das vidas, como na produção de mortos, identificando uma equação que visa atender prioritariamente a pressupostos econômicos em detrimento da (...) saúde da população. Foucault no curso Segurança, Território e População, proferido entre janeiro e abril de 1978, dedica boa parte de suas aulas a fazer um exame do que identifica como poder pastoral. Em qual contexto surge esta problematização? De que maneira o poder pastoral se implicaria a estratégias de governamentalidade direcionadas por proposições econômicas? E, ampliando o horizonte de questionamento, cabe-nos examinar quais os vestígios do poder pastoral que poderíamos encontrar nas relações entre credores e devedores, em relações vinculadas à constituição de (...) “sujeitos de necessidades”. A partir dessas questões, pretendemos examinar, dentre os múltiplos modos da biopolítica se infiltrar em nossas vidas, a preeminência de um poder pastoral comprometido com uma lógica de endividamento da existência. This book contains a selection of papers presented at the V South Cone Meeting of Philosophy and History of Science. The language of the chapters is Portuguese, Spanish or English. Published by the South Cone Association for Philosophy and History of Science, www.afhic.org.

This paper addresses the context of emergence, development, and current status of the use of history and philosophy of science in science education in Brazil. After a short overview of the three areas (history of science, philosophy of science, and science education) in Brazil, the paper focuses on the application of this approach to teaching physics, chemistry, and biology at the secondary school level. The first Brazilian researches along this line appeared more consistently in the decade of 1970. From 1980 (...) onwards, the importance of this approach became widely accepted, and the subject became a common theme of dissertations and theses, appearing in conferences and educational journals. Since 1998, the use of history and philosophy of science was included among the government recommendations for secondary school science teaching in Brazil. Nowadays, this is an important line of research in graduate programs on science and mathematics education. However, the actual use of this approach in secondary education is still a desideratum. This paper characterizes José Celestino Mutis’ appropriation of Newton in the Viceroyalty of New Granada. First, we examine critically traditional accounts of Mutis’ works highlighting, on the one hand, their inadequacy for directing their claims toward the nineteenth-century independence from Spain and, on the other, for not differentiating between Newtonianism and Enlightenment. Next, we portray Mutis’ complex Newtonianism from his own statements and from printed sources, including a variety of works and translations from British, Dutch, and French authors, in (...) addition to a wide range of Newton’s writings, unusual for an eighteenth-century reader in the Americas. Finally, we analyze a salient claim of Mutis’ Newtonianism in order to depict his appropriation and transformation of Newton’s ideas: the characterization of Newtonian experimental physics as a useful science. In so doing, Mutis further developed metaphysical and methodological positions not present in Newton’s works. (shrink)

Este artículo examina las figuras del crimen y la sexualidad dentro del cine argentino con el interés de reflexionar sobre el modo en que se construyen imágenes sobre determinados cuerpos en procesos narrativos que exponen a los sujetos representados en contigüidad con ideas del orden cultural. Se trata de procedimientos simbólicos que, al enlazar por medio del registro audiovisual, cuerpos concretos con prácticas y conductas establecen parámetros de reproducción social. La toma de posición de la cámara no repone la pregunta (...) de la pertinencia de adoptar la perspectiva de la víctima o el victimario, sino que implica reflexionar sobre la manera en que la aparición de un rostro y un cuerpo precisos, en multiplicación y contigüidad (con aspectos que conectan imaginariamente la clase, la etnicidad y el género), quedan ligados con una referencialidad que repite o invierte un proceso de afirmación social. Con una metodología que retoma las prácticas del análisis cinematográfico, las herramientas de la historiografía del arte y los planteos de la filosofía política como trasfondo de ciertas preocupaciones teóricas, se desarrollan estas problemáticas desde un recorrido por las nociones sobre el cine de género, algunos filmes contemporáneos que retratan el conurbano y particularmente el cine de José Celestino Campusano.
